NINETEEN

IT BEGINS IN ASHLEY OAKS

Juan De La Torre tilted his best cowboy hat back on his forehead and whistled softly through his front teeth. “Damn, he’s mad.”

Steven Mann paced back and forth in front of the area set up to celebrate breaking ground on the new building. Blanche Mann sat on a folding chair under a canopy erected to one side of the ceremony area, tanned legs crossed, fanning herself while she watched her irate husband talking loudly on his satellite phone. She looked like a fancy princess in a tailored pale blue suit and matching wide-brimmed hat with floppy flowers decorating it. The mayor sat beside her in his regular old suit frowning at his cellphone. Travis, meanwhile, stood under the canopy looking tired, worried, and maybe slightly amused. He had chosen to wear expensive jeans and a white shirt, rather than suffering in a suit. The rest of the construction crew was in work clothes and milling off to one side, grumbling.

“Rich men don’t like to be inconvenienced by life,” Shane, one of the construction workers, observed. “They ain’t like us. No one tells them no.”

“Technology doesn’t give a shit who he is,” Juan said, waving his phone. The last text message he’d attempted to send to his ex-wife hadn’t gone through. He kept trying, but to no avail. Her last message scared him shitless.

It had simply read: They’re outside the building.

With the phones down, there was nothing he could do other than worry for her safety.

Travis strode over to Juan, a pensive look on his face. His face was beaded with sweat, but he hadn’t dared to roll the sleeves of his white button-down shirt. “Sounds like the Austin-American Statesman reporter hasn’t been seen since yesterday. The news crew from San Antonio left the station early this morning, but the station hasn’t heard from them. The one from Austin was redirected to the hospital to cover an armed standoff. Steven hired a photographer and film crew to cover the event for promotional materials and they’re supposedly on their way, but he hasn’t heard from them since they said they’d run into bad traffic.”

“So, what does that mean for us?” Juan asked.

“We gotta break ground today if he wants us to keep to the schedule. He can’t hold us up,” Travis replied.

“Yeah, he can. He’s the rich dude funding this,” Shane scoffed. “He don’t care that we need to work to make a living.”

“I’ll handle him.” Travis set his hands on his hips and sighed. “Sadly, I have a lot of experience dealing with men like him. I’ll do my best to find a solution to his need for publicity for the project and our need to start construction today.”

Juan watched Travis amble back to where Steven Mann was animatedly cussing someone out on the other end of the call. The other city officials and local business owners present for the event looked uneasy as they chatted among themselves. A few kept furtively checking their phones, their brows puckered with concern.
